Rick Barnes, Tennessee MCBB Agree to 'Lifetime' Contract Ahead of 2025 Season

Andrew PetersAug 28, 2025

Tennessee basketball has committed to Rick Barnes for as long as the head coach wants to continue coaching.

The school announced Thursday a "lifetime" deal for Barnes, who has been in Knoxville since 2015.

"Rick has taken our program to unprecedented heights, and we are absolutely thrilled to have him continue coaching on Rocky Top for the rest of his career," Tennessee athletic director Danny White said. "He has constructed this program the right way, achieving elite-level success on the court while also ensuring that all our players excel off the court."

Barnes took over at Tennessee following Donnie Tyndall's tumultuous exit, inheriting a program that had reached the NCAA tournament just once in the four years prior.

After two years of some growing pains, Barnes established the Vols as a regular tournament team as well as a perennial contender in the SEC. Tennessee has reached the NCAA tournament every year since 2017-18, aside from the 2019-20 season when no postseason was held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under Barnes, the Vols have won three SEC regular-season titles and won the SEC tournament in 2022, giving Tennessee its first since 1979.

Before Barnes, the Vols had reached the Sweet 16 just seven times in program history, and they've been four times since he took over. Tennessee has also reached the Elite Eight in each of the last seasons after making just one trip outside of Barnes' tenure.

Barnes, who is entering his 39th season as a head coach in college basketball, is the Division I active wins leader with 836. He was the SEC Coach of the Year in 2018 and the Naismith Coach of the Year in 2019.

"I am incredibly thankful God brought me to the University of Tennessee 10-and-a-half years ago. It is an honor and a blessing to serve as the head basketball coach here," Barnes said. "I have had the chance to meet so many wonderful people, both on and off campus, who have impacted my life. The Knoxville community means so much not just to me, but to my entire family."

Before signing the lifetime deal with Tennessee, Barnes was set to make $5.9 million for the 2025-26 season, but his new deal gives him a slight bump up to $6 million a year, per Rocky Top Insider's Ryan Schumpert.

Though Tennessee lost some significant pieces over the offseason, namely second-round pick Chaz Lanier, the Vols are expected to remain competitive thanks to a strong recruiting class and a handful of notable transfers.

Nate Ament, the No. 4 player in the class of 2025, according to 247Sports' composite rankings, highlights the Vols' recruiting class. Tennessee also landed former Maryland guard Ja'Kobi Gillespie, one of the top transfers this offseason, in the portal.

Tennessee will tip off the 11th season of the Barnes era with an exhibition matchup against Duke in Knoxville on Oct. 26.
