Fans Rip USA for Shocking 1-Point Loss to Uruguay in 2025 FIBA AmeriCup Group Stage
A day after needing overtime to beat the Bahamas, the United States wasn't so lucky as it suffered its first defeat of the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup.
Santiago Vescovi's 24 points and five assists powered Uruguay to an 86-85 win over Team USA.

Vescovi's layup gave Uruguay a three-point buffer in the waning moments. Jahmius Ramsey's long-range jumper missed the mark for the United States. Tyler Cavanaugh settled for a quick bucket around the basket, but it was too little too late for Stephen Silas' squad.
The AmeriCup isn't a priority for the U.S. men's national team. Between 2007 and 2017, the Americans didn't even take part in the tournament. Still, fans are accustomed to seeing Team USA maintain a certain standard on the hardwood regardless of who's on the roster.
That was evident in some of the reaction on social media:
Uruguay maintained a clear advantage inside throughout the game. It out-rebounded the United States 45-33 and turned 18 offensive boards into 20 second-chance points. The Uruguayans also scored 46 points in the paint to 32 for the U.S.
Langston Galloway dropped a game-high 25 points for Team USA, while Ramsey chipped in with 19. Together, they combined to shoot 8-of-16 from beyond the arc.
With seven points and seven assists, Jerian Grant put in a solid performance as well.
All is not lost for the United States as it heads into its final game against Brazil on Tuesday. The top two countries from each group advance, and the two best third-place finishers move on as well. Team USA could come up short yet again and still punch a ticket to the quarterfinals.
But there's no question a lot of improvement is needed if the U.S. is to claim a place on the medal podium.
