Kings Reportedly Not Actively Pursuing Malik Monk Trade amid Russell Westbrook Rumors

Zach BacharAug 24, 2025

The Sacramento Kings are "not actively engaged" in trade talks surrounding shooting guard Malik Monk after exploring deals involving him earlier in the offseason, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

The Kings have also "maintained an interest" in Russell Westbrook as a potential option in free agency, per Stein.

Westbrook is still available on the free-agent market after spending the 2024-25 season with the Denver Nuggets.

On July 28, Matt George of ABC 10 in Sacramento reported that there was "mutual interest" between Westbrook and the Kings, but the team was still attempting to move a guard such as Monk in order to open a backcourt spot for the veteran.

Stein reported Sunday that the team was looking into creating a possible rotation role for Westbrook "by other means rather than dealing Monk," though.

Sacramento's backcourt for the 2025-26 season became crowded following the addition of point guard Dennis Schröder in a sign-and-trade agreement with the Detroit Pistons in July.

Monk averaged a career-high 17.2 points per game for the Kings during his 2024-25 campaign, but his efficiency decreased. His 43.9 field-goal percentage and 32.5 three-point percentage both represented the lowest marks throughout his three-year tenure with Sacramento.

The former first-round pick still has three seasons remaining on a four-year, $78 million contract that he signed in 2024. This includes a $21.6 million player option for the 2027-28 season.

As for Westbrook, he averaged 13.3 points and 6.1 assists to go along with 4.9 rebounds per game on 44.9/32.3/66.1 shooting splits during his lone year with the Nuggets.

Sacramento still seems to be interested in adding him, but trading Monk in order to do so doesn't appear to be an imminent outcome.
