USA Beats Isaiah Mobley, Bahamas in OT in 2025 Men's AmeriCup Group Stage
The United States survived a scare from the Bahamas to tip off the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup in Managua, Nicaragua, winning 105-93 in overtime on Saturday.
Team USA had to regroup after some late dramatics by the Bahamas.
Franco Miller, who finished with 27 points, drilled a long-range jumper from the corner as the buzzer sounded in regulation. His first attempt clanged off the rim, but Kentwan Smith grabbed the offensive rebound and quickly fed Miller to set up the game-tying bucket.
The Bahamas grabbed the early lead in the extra frame before Cameron Reynolds hit a go-ahead three at the 3:27 mark. From there, Team USA didn't look back and built a double-digit advantage.
Zachary Auguste had a game-high 28 points for the United States, while Reynolds, Langston Galloway, Jerian Grant and Tyler Cavanaugh all scored in double figures. Cavanaugh opened the tournament with a double-double by collecting 14 boards.
Domnick Bridgewater's 21 points weren't enough to put the Bahamas over the top. Isaiah Mobley had a big game as well, totaling 18 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, one steal and one block.
The United States has two more games in the group phase. It plays Uruguay on Sunday and then Brazil on Tuesday.
The top two teams in each group advance, and the two best third-place finishers round out the quarterfinal field. It wouldn't have been the end of the world if Team USA came up short in its opener.
Maybe Saturday will serve as a bit of a wakeup call for Stephen Silas' squad.
