Derrick Rose's No. 1 Bulls Jersey to Be Retired January 24 vs. Celtics

The Chicago Bulls are set to honor one of their greatest players during the 2025-26 season.

On Thursday, the Bulls announced that they will retire former star point guard Derrick Rose's No. 1 jersey in a ceremony during their matchup against the Boston Celtics on Jan. 24.

The Bulls released a video of Rose's emotional reaction to learning that he'll have his jersey retired:

Former rival and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James paid homage to Rose following the announcement:

Rose will be just the fifth player in Chicago franchise history to have his jersey retired, joining a prestigious group that features Jerry Sloan's No. 4, Bob Love's No. 10, Michael Jordan's No. 23 and Scottie Pippen's No. 33.

The Bulls drafted Rose with the No. 1 pick in the 2008 draft, and he immediately established himself as the new face of the franchise, something they had been missing since Jordan's retirement. He was named the 2009 Rookie of the Year before blossoming into one of the best players in the league.

Rose spearheaded a massive turnaround for Chicago and led them to a first-place finish in the Eastern Conference with a 62-30 record in the 2010-11 season. He was named the NBA MVP that year after averaging 25.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 7.7 assists. He helped the Bulls reach the Eastern Conference Finals, though they lost to the Miami Heat and the Big 3 of James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

Unfortunately, it all came crashing down for Rose just one year later when he tore his ACL. He sat out the entire 2012-13 season, and while he was still an effective point guard upon his eventual return to the court, he wasn't able to achieve his previous level of dominance.

A three-time All-Star, Rose was one of the most explosive players in NBA history before his injuries. While he played for multiple other franchises before he retired last September, he will forever be remembered for helping the Bulls return to prominence after the famed Jordan/Pippen Era.
