Giants Exec Shuts Down Jameis Winston Trade Rumors Ahead of 2025 NFL Season

Andrew PetersAug 19, 2025

The New York Giants aren't entertaining any trades for one of their back up quarterbacks ahead of the start of the season.

Per the New York Post's Ryan Dunleavy, assistant general manager Brandon Brown shut down trade rumors regarding Jameis Winston on Tuesday. Brown added that Winston has made it known he wants to be in New York.

"Appreciate the interest, but Jameis is a New York Giant," Brown said.

The Giants have seemingly been steadfast in their disinterest in trading Winston. NorthJersey.com's Art Stapleton reported last month that the team wouldn't trade Winston "unless someone makes them a Godfather offer," adding that New York likes Winston's "presence in the room."

The Giants have a surplus of capable quarterbacks heading into the season, so it's understandable that teams were hoping to make a deal for Winston.

New York signed Winston to a two-year, $8 million deal in March before signing veteran Russell Wilson to a one-year deal worth up to $21 million. The Giants then picked up Jaxson Dart in the first round of the NFL draft.

Wilson earned the starting job in July, but head coach Brian Daboll left the QB2 slot open heading into training camp. Earlier this week, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that Dart has gotten a lot of second-team reps and is making a strong argument to be Wilson's backup.

"They love where Dart's at, how he's developed, both on the field and off. He's been a high achiever, fast learner, highly motivated, all those things," Fowler said on SportsCenter. "But head coach Brian Daboll made a key word last night, develop. He said he wants to continue to develop Dart. So, they're not going to rush him out there. Russell Wilson is entrenched as the starter, but Dart has helped himself as far as the QB2. He gets a lot of the second-team reps in the practices."

Winston, an 11-year veteran, has become a valuable backup quarterback in recent years. He spent the 2024 season with the Cleveland Browns and ended up playing 12 games, throwing for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
