Russell Wilson Named Giants' QB1 by Brian Daboll, Says Dart, Winston Are 'Competing'
The New York Giants are committing to Russell Wilson as their starter ahead of the 2025 season, head coach Brian Daboll told reporters on Wednesday.
“These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter," Daboll said, per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.
Veteran quarterback Jameis Winston and 2025 first-round pick Jaxson Dart will be the top candidates to back up Wilson as training camp begins Wednesday in East Rutherford.

Third-year backup Tommy DeVito will also be competing for a spot on the 53-man roster this offseason.
Daboll declined to answer whether Dart has a chance of beating out Winston to earn the QB2 spot, per Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports.
When asked what his goals were for Dart, Daboll answered, "To get better every day."
General manager Joe Schoen was then asked about the possibility of redshirting rookie quarterbacks like Dart.
Schoen answered that the process worked with the Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, who made his first start in Week 17 of his rookie 2017 season.
He also noted that plans to rest rookie quarterbacks sometimes go awry, like during his time in the Buffalo Bills' front office, when the team planned to wait to let Josh Allen develop but ended up playing him in Week 1 of his rookie 2018 campaign.
"I think there's some real benefits from sitting and learning, specifically from some of the guys in the room that have the experience that they have, but if the coaching staff at some point feels it's right and he's ready, I'll leave that up to them," Schoen said.
Given that the Giants brought in both Wilson, who signed a one-year deal with the team, and Winston, who arrived on a two-year contract, to relatively short-term agreements ahead of the 2025 campaign, New York will hope to see Dart develop during his rookie season regardless of the outcome of the training camp roster battle.
Giants training camp began Wednesday and runs through Aug. 13. If the QB2 spot remains undecided by Aug. 9, Winston, Dart and DeVito could continue the competition during the team's preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills.
