Sean McDermott Rips Bills After 38-0 Loss to Caleb Williams, Bears in NFL Preseason

Zach BacharAug 18, 2025

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott wasn't pleased with his team's performance during a lopsided 38-0 preseason loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday night.

"Certainly not up to our standard, what we expect," McDermott said, via ESPN. "Got a lot of work to do, that's very clear. Doesn't matter who's out there -- ones, twos, threes, fours -- whoever it is, we expect them to perform and we expect our level of performance to be much better than that."

Buffalo struggled to contain Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who finished 6-of-10 for 107 yards and a touchdown in just two drives.

Williams led Chicago on a 92-yard touchdown drive to open the game, needing just seven plays to find the end zone.

While it's worth noting Buffalo's starters didn't play in the contest and its second-string defense faced the Bears' first-team offense, McDermott still wasn't satisfied.

"Get out there and playing against their ones, I expect -- we expect -- to compete with them, and that wasn't the case early," McDermott said, per ESPN. "And then our twos, who were out there against their twos, and our threes against their threes -- it didn't get much better."

"I'm concerned about a lot of things coming off tonight," he added.

The Bills gained just 180 yards in the defeat, while Chicago amassed 528 yards of total offense.

Buffalo failed to convert on all eight of its third-down opportunities and never advanced into the Bears' red zone.

Mitchell Trubisky, Mike White and Shane Buechele all saw action at quarterback for the Bills but failed to make their presence felt. The three signal-callers combined to finish 12-of-28 for 103 yards, posting a 55.7 passer rating.

The Bills' productivity will undoubtedly be different when reigning MVP Josh Allen and the rest of their starters take the field in Week 1 of the regular season, but depth could be an issue for Buffalo as it looks to capture a sixth consecutive AFC East title.
