Sophie Cunningham to Undergo MRI After Suffering Knee Injury in Fever's Win vs. Sun

Zach BacharAug 17, 2025

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham will undergo an MRI on Monday after suffering a knee injury during the team's 99-93 win over the Connecticut Sun, according to ESPN's Alexa Philippou.

In the second quarter of Sunday's game, Sun guard Bria Hartley collided with Cunningham under the basket after making a pass along the baseline.

Cunningham stayed down on the floor before she was eventually helped into Indiana's locker room with the assistance of the team's medical staff.

She was later ruled out with a right knee injury.

Cunningham previously missed five games earlier in the season due to an ankle sprain.

The 29-year-old is in the midst of her first year on the Fever after she was acquired in an offseason trade with the Phoenix Mercury.

Cunningham's inaugural season with Indiana has been impressive, averaging 8.9 points and 3.6 rebounds to go along with 1.2 assists in 25.7 minutes per game. Her 47.7 field-goal percentage and 44.3 three-point percentage are both career-high marks.

She's also stepped up recently, moving to the starting lineup on July 16. In 12 games as a starter heading into Sunday's action, she averaged 12.2 points per game on 53.3/49.2/90.9 shooting splits.

Cunningham is the latest Fever player to go down this season. Star point guard Caitlin Clark hasn't played since July 15 due to a groin injury, while fellow point guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson suffered season-ending injuries during a 107-101 win over Phoenix on July 30.

Indiana will be hoping that Cunningham's injury isn't too serious, especially with the team currently battling for playoff positioning.

The Fever sit at No. 7 in the WNBA standings with a record of 19-16.
