Fever's Sydney Colson, Aari McDonald Out for WNBA Season Amid Caitlin Clark Injury

Mike ChiariAug 8, 2025

The Indiana Fever announced Friday that guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson will both miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season.

Both McDonald and Colson suffered injuries during the Fever's 95-60 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday with McDonald breaking a bone in her foot and Colson tearing her ACL.

The Fever have also been without superstar guard Caitlin Clark for the past nine games due to a groin injury.

Clark sent a message of support to both of her teammates in a post on Instagram:

McDonald, 26, is in the midst of her fifth WNBA season and her first as a member of the Fever.

The 2021 No. 3 overall draft pick of the Atlanta Dream has started 13 of the 20 games she has appeared in for Indiana this season, averaging 9.8 points, 4.7 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals per contest, while shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from beyond the arc.

McDonald is one of the main players who picked up the slack in terms of minutes played during Clark's absence, along with Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull.

Colson is a 36-year-old veteran in the midst of her first season with Fever after previous stints with the New York Liberty, San Antonio Stars, Minnesota Lynx, Las Vegas Aces and Chicago Sky during her 11-year WNBA career.

The two-time WNBA champion appeared in 30 games for Indiana this season and made six starts, but she played only 13.5 minutes per game and averaged 2.4 points and 2.0 assists per contest.

Although multiple injuries have limited Clark to playing in only 13 of the Fever's 31 games this season, they have remained firmly in the playoff mix.

At 17-14, Indiana is third in the Eastern Conference and has the fifth-best record in the WNBA overall.

Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston have risen to the occasion and played like stars, allowing the Fever to go a respectable 5-4 over the past nine games without Clark.

The 35-point loss to the Mercury was their least-competitive game of the season, though, raising question marks about the teams viability with Clark on the shelf, especially with McDonald and Colson now out for the season.

Despite that, the Fever are trending ahead of last season when they went 20-20 and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

There are still 13 games left in the regular season for the Fever, meaning there is plenty of time for Clark to return, but no firm timeline for that to happen has been announced.

Until Clark comes back, the trio of Mitchell, Boston and Natasha Howard will continue to lead the way with Cunningham and Hull seeing increased playing time as well.
