Cubs' Jed Hoyer Says Mike Soroka Trade 'Not Looking Like a Good Bet' After Injury
The Chicago Cubs made a risky move when they traded for starting pitcher Mike Soroka ahead of last week's deadline, and that risk may not have paid off.
Soroka left his first start for the Cubs after just two innings because of shoulder discomfort and is now on the injured list. Jed Hoyer, the Cubs' president of baseball operations, admitted that, in hindsight, the trade doesn't look that good.
"We knew the velocity was trending down," Hoyers said Tuesday, per ESPN's Jesse Rogers. "We talked through that extensively. Given the market, given the asking price ... we felt like it was a good bet to make. Right now, it's not looking like a good bet."

Over his final few starts with the Washington Nationals, Soroka saw his velocity start to drop, indicating a potential injury. Soroka decided to undergo an MRI, though the testing didn't reveal any injuries.
Soroka has a 3-8 record with a 4.86 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 17 starts this season.
How long Soroka will be out of the rotation is still to be determined, but any long-term injury would be bad news for the Cubs as they look to put together a deep postseason run.
