LeBron James Reportedly Keeps Eyeing Lakers Moves, Rich Paul Statement 'Still Stands'

Zach BacharAug 4, 2025

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is still reportedly monitoring the team's offseason activity after his agent, Rich Paul, previously confirmed that he would be doing so.

"I'm told that the statement that Rich Paul gave to Shams Charania back in June when LeBron opted in still stands, that LeBron and his representatives will be monitoring the Lakers' moves that they make because they recognize that there's only a very limited amount of time left in his career and he wants to be competing for championships," ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported Monday on NBA Today (11:51 mark). "Whatever time that is."

After James accepted his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania that his client would see if Los Angeles is attempting to compete for a championship.

"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul said. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future," he added. "We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."

The Lakers are coming off a 2024-25 campaign in which they finished with a 50-32 record before suffering a first-round playoff defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games.

While Los Angeles is looking to return to the playoffs in 2026, the team is also attempting to build around Luka Dončić as its long-term centerpiece after acquiring the 26-year-old in a blockbuster Feb. 2 trade with the Dallas Mavericks.

As for James, Paul's comments seemed to indicate that the 40-year-old may not be content playing on a Lakers squad that he doesn't believe is a genuine championship contender as his legendary NBA career winds down.

Los Angeles has been active in free agency as it targeted issues that plagued the team late last season, specifically its perimeter defense and frontcourt rotation.

The Lakers signed center Deandre Ayton to a two-year deal and brought in veteran guard Marcus Smart on a two-year, $11 million contract. Los Angeles also handed forward Jake LaRavia a deal worth $12 million over two years.

Meanwhile, the front office re-signed backup center Jaxson Hayes on a one-year contract.

As the Lakers continue to navigate through the offseason and potentially explore opportunities on the trade market, James is still keeping an eye on their moves.
