Lakers Reportedly Eye Salary Cap Flexibility Over Pursuit of Star in 2027 NBA FA

Paul KasabianAug 2, 2025

One NBA source told ESPN's Dave McMenamin that the Los Angeles Lakers are "motivated" to have salary cap flexibility for the 2027 offseason, though not necessarily for a big-name star.

"While the team's aversion to offering free agent forward Dorian Finney-Smith a deal that extended beyond 2027—leading him to sign with the Houston Rockets— left some around the league with the impression that L.A. was preserving cap space to go after a big name in free agency that summer, a source familiar with the Lakers' thinking insists that their strategy is motivated by flexibility, not pining for another potential star.

"...As one Lakers source put it: 'If you don't have optionality, you get stuck.'"

The Lakers just made a big move (albeit one that was a formality) on Saturday, signing five-time All-NBA player Luka Dončić to a three-year, $165 million extension.

The Lakers only have one firm financial commitment for the 2027-28 season, per Spotrac, in Dončić at an estimated $53.6 million. However, forward Jarred Vanderbilt does hold a $13.3 million player option for the 2027-28 season. L.A. also has team options on three players: forward Dalton Knecht, guard Bronny James and forward Adou Thiero.

Obviously, the Lakers need to build out a roster for the future, so that's going to change. However, as it stands now, the Lakers do have that "optionality" McMenamin discussed. L.A. wanted to build its future around Dončić and now must figure out the best way to do so moving forward.

Another star could be feasible given the cap room the Lakers have. Denver Nuggets big man Nikola Jokić notably can opt out of his deal in 2027, and the same goes for Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Whether the Lakers shoot for adding a star or decide to build around Dončić with more depth and complementary pieces remains to be seen, but what's certain is that L.A.'s future revolves around the five-time All-NBA player.
