Rob Manfred Downplays Reported Bryce Harper Confrontation About MLB Salary Cap

Paul KasabianAug 1, 2025

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred downplayed a reported tense meeting with the Philadelphia Phillies and specifically superstar Bryce Harper while speaking with reporters on Friday in Chicago, where he was in town to announce that the 2027 MLB All-Star Game will take place in Wrigley Field.

"You know, I don't talk about those player meetings," Manfred said. "Let me say this. I think more has been made out of this than needs to be made out of it. You know, Bryce expressed his views. At the end of the meeting, we shook hands and went our separate ways. Just not all that significant."

On Monday, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that Harper told Manfred to "get the f--k out of our clubhouse" if he wanted to speak with the Phillies about a potential salary cap.

Manfred was meeting with Philadelphia as part of his annual tour speaking with all 30 franchises to "improve his relations" with players, per Passan.

MLB infamously does not have a salary cap, and players would like to keep things that way with eyes toward a new collective bargaining agreement. The current one expires on Dec. 1, 2026.

As far as the meeting goes, sources told Passan that Manfred's talk about the state of MLB's economics got Harper upset. Manfred didn't specifically mention a salary cap, but frustrations boiled over to the point that Harper got up from his chair, looked at Manfred and said: "If you want to speak about that, you can get the f--k out of our clubhouse."

Manfred reportedly replied and said he was "not going to get the f--k out of here" and noted the importance of talking about MLB's business.

The meeting reportedly went on. Manfred and Harper shook hands, although the Phillies star reportedly didn't answer phone calls from the commissioner the next day.

"It was pretty intense, definitely passionate," Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos told Passan on the matter. "Both of 'em. The commissioner giving it back to Bryce and Bryce giving it back to the commissioner. That's Harp. He's been doing this since he was 15 years old. It's just another day. I wasn't surprised."

That individual dispute between Harper and Manfred is over, but the fight between MLBPA and MLB en route to a new collective bargaining agreement is clearly playing out right now and something to monitor closely moving forward.
