The New York Yankees are parting ways with Marcus Stroman ahead of the anticipated season debut of starter Luis Gil this weekend.

The Yankees released Stroman while adding right-handers David Bednar, Jake Bird and Camilo Doval to the active roster on Friday.

Stroman had recorded a 6.23 ERA through nine starts and 39.0 innings pitched this season.

His release will allow the Yankees to give starts to Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, Gil and Will Warren while slotting in recent Triple-A call-up Cam Schlittler at the bottom of the rotation.

Schlittler began the 2025 season with Double-A Somerset. He was promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in June and went on to record a 2.82 ERA over 14 starts before he was called up for his MLB debut in July.

The 24-year-old has since made three starts for the Yankees, throwing 14.2 innings and allowing 18 hits and nine walks while striking out 15 batters over the span.

Stroman's release could be seen as a vote of confidence for Schlittler after the rookie allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of his most recent outing, a 4-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays last Monday.

When asked after the game what he thought the next step in Schlittler's development would be, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he was hoping to see the pitcher work on his pitches outside of his 97.8 mile-per-hour fastball.

"There's a lot of good in tonight, around some struggles there," Boone said about Schlittler.

The Yankees apparently decided to focus on developing those "good" aspects Schlittler's game rather than sticking with Stroman, who signed a two-year deal with the club ahead of the 2024 season.

Stroman had struggled while dealing with injuries toward the end of his last All-Star season with the Chicago Cubs in 2023, but the Yankees were hoping to see him bounce back with a healthier campaign in the Bronx.

Instead Stroman went on to post some of the highest numbers of his career, with a 4.31 ERA through 154.2 innings in 2024 followed by a career-high ERA in 2025.

His release comes the day after he allowed six hits and four earned runs in 5.0 innings of his final Yankees start, a 7-4 win over the Rays on Thursday.

Stroman was making $18.5 million this season. He was on track to fall short of the 140 innings-pitched minimum that would have triggered his $18 million player option for 2026, per Spotrac.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported ahead of the 2025 season that the Yankees had been "actively" trying to trade Stroman last winter.

With the veteran starter still on the roster after the 2025 trade deadline and Gil days away from returning to the rotation, the Yankees apparently decided to extend the runway for Schlittler by eating the money remaining on Stroman's contract.

Gil, who has missed the first half of the 2025 season with a lat strain, is set to make his first Yankees appearance of the season against the Miami Marlins on Sunday.
