Chris Paul Reacts to 'Unction' Nickname for Clippers Roster After Signing Contract
Veteran point guard Chris Paul is taking the jokes about the age of the Los Angeles Clippers' roster in stride.
After Paul reunited with the Clips, they have six players with at least 13 years of NBA service time. During an event Monday, one fan asked the 12-time All-Star about the "Unction" nickname that has gained traction on social media.
Paul said he's "definitely an 'unc'" and added the Clippers have a "great mix of young guys, older guys."
Paul turned 40 in May. Kawhi Leonard, James Harden and Bradley Beal are all into their mid-30s. Center Brook Lopez, another notable offseason addition, is 37.
There's no getting around the fact the 2025-26 Clippers are built to win now, especially if the "now" were talking about was five years ago. The franchise might as well embrace their Expendables-esque vibes rather than push back against a narrative that's pretty tough to dispute.
The formula might actually work too.
Los Angeles won 50 games last year despite Leonard only making 37 appearances and made upgrades by signing Paul, Beal and Lopez. Paul and Lopez can continue to be effective in lesser roles, while all of the discourse around Beal's contract obscured the fact he averaged 17 points on 49.7 percent shooting in 2024-25.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are the clear championship favorites for next season. When it comes to the top-four race in the Western Conference, the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets will once again be formidable challengers for the Clippers.
But nobody should be surprised if the veteran-laden Clips get the last laugh on all of the fans who have mocked their offseason business.
