Mets Reportedly Expected to Focus on Depth, Keep Top Prospects at MLB Trade Deadline

Adam WellsJul 25, 2025

Having moved into first place in the National League East, the New York Mets aren't necessarily looking to make a huge splash before the trade deadline.

Per ESPN's Buster Olney, the expectation from rival executives is the Mets are more likely to focus on deals that "improve the team's depth without pillaging its growing farm system" rather than pursuing a blockbuster deal.

Looking at the Mets' roster needs, they don't have to make an aggressive move to solidify their status as a World Series contender. Third base is the position most fans are going to focus on for an upgrade.

Mets third basemen are hitting a collective .214/.273/.371 in 418 plate appearances. Not surprisingly, they are one of many teams that connected to Eugenio Suárez of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Arizona might be able to get a good return for Suárez, but the fact his contract runs out after this season would indicate it won't take a massive haul to land him.

A trade deadline in which the Mets improve their depth would be in keeping with what president of baseball operations David Stearns did last year. Their 2024 deadline acquisitions included Jesse Winker, Ryne Stanek, Paul Blackburn, Huascar Brazoban and Phil Maton.

While not all of those additions hit in the way the Mets were hoping, they gave the team enough help around their star players to push them into the playoffs. The team wound up going on a run to the NLCS.

The Mets already have the talent at the top of their roster to get to a World Series. Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Pete Alonso make for an excellent quartet at the top of the lineup. The pitching staff ranks fourth in MLB with a 3.59 ERA.

Making moves on the margins, while also keeping top prospects like Jett Williams and Jonah Tong, will allow the Mets to compete for a title this year and maintain their pipeline to be great in the future.

The Mets have won four straight games and lead the Philadelphia Phillies by one game in the win column for the top spot in the NL East. They are 2.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in the NL.
