Diamondbacks Reportedly Plan to Trade 'Some' Veterans amid Eugenio Suarez Rumors

Mike ChiariJul 24, 2025

The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly expected to be sellers leading up to the MLB trade deadline on July 31, although it remains to be seen how many pieces they are willing to part with.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the D-Backs have informed teams that they are looking to move "at least some of their veterans," although multiple factors will influence how big of sellers they become.

Those factors reportedly include the level of interest from other teams, whether their offers are more valuable than the draft pick compensation they could receive from qualifying-offer-eligible players signing elsewhere during the offseason and whether the Diamondbacks front office believes it has a chance to vie for a wild-card playoff spot in the National League.

Third baseman Eugenio Suárez is the biggest name rumored to perhaps be available in Arizona, and although it isn't yet certain if the Diamondbacks plan to trade him, Rosenthal reported that the D-Backs are scouting the minor-league systems of teams believed to be interested in Suárez, including the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners.

Rumors have run rampant regarding contending teams having interest in Suárez, with ESPN's Jeff Passan reporting Wednesday that he has "suitors galore," including the Yankees, Mets, Cubs and Mariners.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post also reported this week that the Yankees, Cubs and Mariners have inquired about Suárez's availability.

The 34-year-old Suárez is in the midst of a career year, as he is slashing .252/.325/.593 with 36 home runs and an MLB-leading 86 RBI.

He was named an All-Star for the second time in his career this season, and he is well on his way to his second 40-homer season and fourth 100-RBI campaign.

The right-handed slugger has never hit for a great average, as evidenced by his career mark of .249, but he is as consistent as any power hitter in the league, having recorded 30 or more home runs in four of the past five seasons.

If the Diamondbacks are indeed going to be sellers, Suárez makes a ton of sense to move given that he is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

The same goes for first baseman Josh Naylor, and starting pitchers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly.

Naylor, 28, was an All-Star for the first time last season with the Cleveland Guardians. He has continued to play well in his first season with the Diamondbacks, slashing .292/.360/.447 with 11 homers and 59 RBI.

Gallen, who turns 30 on Aug. 3, is just two years removed from being named an All-Star and finishing third in NL Cy Young Award voting.

In six MLB seasons prior to 2025, he only had an ERA over 4.00 once, and never had one higher than 4.30. However, this season has been a struggle, as he is 7-11 with a 5.58 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 116 strikeouts over 121 innings.

Meanwhile, the 36-year-old Kelly has been the ace of Arizona's staff, going 9-5 with a 3.32 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 118 strikeouts over 122 innings pitched.

Although the Diamondbacks have a hugely talented roster and reached the World Series in 2023, they are currently 5.5 games out of a wild-card spot with a 50-53 record.

It remains possible that they could go on a run and get back in the mix, but if they fail to do so and don't trade away some of their vets, they would risk losing them for minimal return in free agency.
