Luka Doncic's Recruiting Reportedly Eased Lakers' Contract Concerns in NBA Free Agency

Joseph ZuckerJul 21, 2025

Luka Dončić's efforts to help sell prospective targets on the Los Angeles Lakers has eased some of the fears about the five-time All-Star's future in Southern California, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

"External fretting about Dončić committing his long-term future to the Lakers, meanwhile, has dissipated considerably thanks to the contributions made by the 26-year-old throughout free agency in collaboration with vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka," Stein reported Sunday.

He also described Dončić as a "lead recruiter" for veteran center Deandre Ayton and guard Marcus Smart.

The 26-year-old can opt out of his contract next summer, a step he'll presumably take given how much more he can make compared to his $49 million player option.

The Lakers, however, lack one major sweetener that would entice him to re-sign. Dončić became ineligible for a supermax extension once the Dallas Mavericks traded him, so L.A. can't table an offer that's well ahead of the competition.

With all things being equal, Dončić could decide there are greener pastures elsewhere.

Beyond his work to help the team strengthen right now, though, he has spoken in aspirational tones about what he hopes to achieve in purple and gold. In an interview for the Lakers' in-house media, he said he wants to be remembered as "the guy that brought championships to the city."

Pelinka and the front office can't take anything for granted when it comes to the dynamic playmaker.

There are no guarantees when it comes to Dončić's free agency a year from now, assuming he opts out. Before LeBron James signed in 2018, one of the prevailing narratives around the organization was also its failure to seal the deal with big free agents. Lakers exceptionalism doesn't go as far as it once did.

For now, the team and its fans at least have to feel as good as they reasonably can about Luka succeeding LeBron as the franchise cornerstone.
