Cam Thomas, Nets Reportedly Not In 'Hurry' on Contract amid NBA Free Agency Rumors
The Brooklyn Nets and Cam Thomas are not in a “hurry” to agree to a new contract, with little urgency from either side as the shooting guard continues to navigate restricted free agency, per New York Post's Brian Lewis.
Thomas, a 2021 first-round pick by the Nets, averaged 24 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists last season over 25 games and 23 starts. The 23-year-old was limited by hamstring injuries throughout the year. Over four seasons, he has played in 215 games with 80 starts for Brooklyn.
While Thomas remains a fan favorite, his contract situation raises questions, as Zach Lowe recently discussed on The Zach Lowe Show.
“The consensus on Cam Thomas — if there is one, and he's got some fans, and he's got some mega-detractors — but the consensus is kind of like empty calories, ball hog,” Lowe commented on how Thomas is viewed around the league, (h/t Sports Illustrated's Wilko Martinez Cachero).
Thomas is a strong shooter, but he’s not seen as a franchise cornerstone worthy of a big investment. He could be a valuable role player off the bench for another team.
“This is a guy that can come off the bench on a good team and just go nuts for five minutes while the best players are resting and hopefully carry our offense,” Lowe said. “I’m not sure that I want him starting at any point on a good team. [...] I don’t know if he knows how to be the fourth option.”
