Lakers' LeBron James Is Only NBA Player with No-Trade Clause After Bradley Beal Buyout

Paul KasabianJul 16, 2025

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is the only NBA player with a no-trade clause after the Phoenix Suns bought out the contract of Bradley Beal, who has since agreed to a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Clippers.

ESPN's Bobby Marks reported the no-trade clause news on Wednesday.

James is on the second season of a two-year, $101.4 million contract that he signed with the Lakers in the summer of 2024. He recently exercised his $52.6 millionย player option to stay with the team for 2025-26.

There has been much speculation about James' future with the Lakers, especially after James' agent, Rich Paul, issued this statement to ESPN'sย Shams Charania after news of his client exercising his 2025-26 player option dropped.

"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul said. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. ... We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."

The 40-year-old James has played 22 seasons, so it's unclear how much longer he'll play in the league. He still has plenty in the tank, as evidenced by his placement on the All-NBA Second Team. Retirement in the near future is conceivable, though, and given Paul's comments, perhaps a push to have James traded to a better contender occurs.

For now, though, it doesn't appear as if that would happen.

The Athletic'sย Dan Woike and Joe Vardon reported, per league sources, that "amid the constant speculation recently about his future, both the Lakers and people close to the NBAโ€™s all-time leading scorer expect that he will be with the organization for training camp once the season begins this fall."

So it doesn't appear as though anything is materializing for now. It's also very possible James simply plays out the year with the Lakers and then considers his options down the road.
