Lakers' LeBron James Reportedly Hasn't Had Trade, Contract Buyout Talks Amid Rumors

Adam WellsJul 16, 2025

When LeBron James declined a request to appear on ESPN's broadcast of Summer League action on Saturday because he "ain't got nothing to talk about," he apparently wasn't lying as it pertains to his status with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Per The Athletic's Dan Woike and Joe Vardon, there have been no discussions between James and the Lakers regarding a trade or contract buyout.

All eyes have been focused on James in the wake of his agent, Rich Paul, issuing a statement to ESPN'sĀ Shams CharaniaĀ on June 29 after the four-time MVP opted into his $52.6 million salary for the 2025-26 season:

"LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."

This situation is extremely unique because for the first time in James' NBA career, he's not the driving force for an organization that just acquired Luka Dončić five months ago. James is still an incredibly important piece for the Lakers, but their efforts need to be focused on building around the 26-year-old superstar.

Everything the Lakers have done this offseason suggests they are looking at the future. They don't currently have anyone signed to aĀ guaranteed contractĀ after the 2026-27 season because theyĀ reportedlyĀ want to pursue a max-level player they can put next to Dončić, assuming he signs an extension at some point.

Despite James not having trade or buyout talks with the Lakers, ESPN'sĀ Dave McMenaminĀ reported on Saturday that four teams interested in acquiring him have contacted Paul.

Teams like the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks have beenĀ citedĀ as potential landing spots for James if he leaves the Lakers.

A buyout makes absolutely no sense from the Lakers' perspective. James is still an incredibly valuable player who could bring them back good value in a trade. He was a second-team All-NBA selection last season after averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds per game.

James' full no-trade clause does complicate the situation for the Lakers because he can dictate where he goes and if he goes.

Given how little traction there has been on anything regarding a trade in the two weeks since Paul's statement came out, it feels like James is at least poised to start the 2025-26 season with the Lakers.

As the season goes along and we see where the Lakers stand in the Western Conference hierarchy, everyone's stance in this situation could change if they don't look like a title contender.
