James' son, Bronny James, was in the starting lineup on Saturday night as the Lakers took on the New Orleans Pelicans.
The relationship between James and the Lakers has been the subject of speculation since his agent, Rich Paul, said in a June 29 statement shared with ESPN's Shams Charania that the star would be taking his 2025-26 player option while also monitoring the Lakers' chances of competing in the near future.
"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul told Charania. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all... We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career."
ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst reported that the Lakers "did not engage in any substantial discussions about extending him by a year or two" before James took his player option.
The potential that James will be entering the season on an expiring contract has led to trade interest in the four-time MVP.
ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported during the Saturday night Summer League broadcast that at least four teams had reached out to Paul about a potential trade for James. The Golden State Warriors had previously been identified as one team interested in James by Shelburne and Windhorst.
As of Saturday night, fans will have to wait to hear James' perspective on those reports.
