76ers' Paul George Undergoes Knee Surgery After Suffering Injury During Workout

Timothy RappJul 14, 2025

Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George "underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure on his left knee Monday to treat an injury suffered during a recent workout," a team official told ESPN's Shams Charania.

Per that report, George will begin rehabbing the injury and be reevaluated before training camp.

For Sixers fans, injury reports are a painful inevitability at this point, though the hope will be that George's situation is a relatively minor one.

Already this summer, No. 3 overall pick VJ Edgecombe has appeared in just one Summer League game—and it was a fantastic debut that saw him score 28 points and add 10 rebounds—due to a left thumb sprain, quelling the excitement over his strong first impression (though he may be back in action soon).

Meanwhile, George has now undergone surgery and Joel Embiid is still recovering from April's arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, with uncertainty over when he'll be back to 100 percent.

According to a report this weekend from Tony Jones of The Athletic, team president Daryl Morey said Embiid "is 'on track' to be healthy for training camp, the start of the preseason and the start of the regular season. League sources tell The Athletic that Embiid still hasn't returned to full on-court basketball activities. He has resumed partial basketball activities, according to the league sources. In light of this, Morey and the front office remain optimistic that Embiid will be on the floor for the season opener."

This follows a disastrous 2024-25 season that saw Embiid play just 19 games, George only make 41 appearances in his first season with the team, star guard Tyrese Maxey limited to 52 contests and the season of promising young guard Jared McCain cut short after just 23 appearances.

The Sixers were ravaged by injuries, going from preseason contenders to a lottery team. The benefit was the ability to draft Edgecombe, who looks like he could be a future star, but the downside was losing another year in the prime of Embiid (31 years old) and George (35), with the latter looking like he may have lost a step when he actually did play (16.2 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 4.3 PPG).

Given that George is still under contract for two more seasons—and has a massive $56.5 million player option for 2027-28 as well—that was a concern, as was this latest injury setback. The Eastern Conference is wide open, and the Sixers have the talent to make some noise, but injury concerns have muted them before.
