76ers Reportedly Have 'Optimism' VJ Edgecombe Can Return from Injury at Summer League

After a strong Summer League debut in Salt Lake City, VJ Edgecombe has been sidelined since the action shifted to Las Vegas due to a thumb injury. However, the Philadelphia 76ers have "optimism" that the rookie could return if his current progress continues, per PHLY Sports' Kyle Neubeck.

Edgecombe put up 28 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in his Summer League debut against Ace Bailey and the Utah Jazz on July 5, but has yet to hit the court in Las Vegas to wow fans in Sin City.

The No. 3 overall pick has since missed three games. On Friday, 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey gave an update on the rookie, who participated in practice on Thursday.

"Sort of a day to day thing," Morey told reporters (h/t Sixers Wire's Ky Carlin). "He was a part of practice. I think yesterday (Thursday)? He did parts of practice, and it'd be more today (Friday), and see how it see how it feels. So, yeah, we're hoping to have him be back out there. Now everyone's exciting, including us and VJ. Mostly VJ. VJ is the most annoyed by this. He really wants to be out there, and our medical staff is trying to be smart about it."

The team is approaching the thumb injury with caution, mindful that it’s only Summer League and prioritizing Edgecombe’s long-term health and readiness for the regular season.

"I frankly don’t know," Morey said when asked if Edgecombe will return to play in Summer League. "It’s really gonna come down to symptoms, and I understand, you know, we just went through a whole season of that. So I have empathy for everyone, but especially when it comes to, you know, offseason exhibition, I think it makes sense to be even more on the cautious side."
