Lakers Reportedly 'Love' Bronny James' 'Attitude' Showcased in Viral Quote from Video
Some NBA players might have been discouraged if they were nothing more than an end-of-the-bench player who averaged 2.3 points per game during their rookie season, but Bronny James is instead focused on earning more playing time by being a "defensive menace."
And that's one of the reasons the Los Angeles Lakers love him heading into his second season.
"I can't lose that defensive drive that will get me on the floor," James told reporters in a clip that generated plenty of attention (2:20 mark). "Cause there's gonna be guys that can go out and score 15, 20 a game. … I'm most likely not gonna be that guy right now, but to get myself on the floor, I have to be a defensive menace.
"And that's my main focus—getting in condition this year. It's been shown that I know how to score the ball a little bit. So understand, stand true to that, but also focus in on the defensive end."
Dan Woike of The Athletic noted Thursday that "video of James' quote went viral, the response almost universally positive, fans seeing the attitude Lakers coaches loved so much since they drafted him last year."
James will always be under the spotlight because he is the son of the legendary LeBron James, which surely played a role in the Lakers' decision to draft him.
However, he was also a 5-star recruit as a prospect, per 247Sports' composite rankings, and has demonstrated his overall potential at times during Summer League and G League play. A willingness to play hard-nosed defense will only further endear him to the Lakers coaches and perhaps earn him more playing time than the 6.7 minutes a night he saw as a rookie.
"Credit to him," South Bay Lakers coach Zach Guthrie said. "With all the things swirling around him and all the things that have been, like, outside noise or like a mixing of rat poison, all this stuff, I think he's been able to block it out and focus on himself and his development."
Ultimately, James is still just a 20-year-old prospect who is at the point of his career where it is far too early to give up on his overall potential.
He averaged 21.9 points, 5.4 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game in 11 G League contests last season all while playing notable perimeter defense. He also averaged 1.9 steals per game at that level and is clearly focused on that side of the ball with the 2025-26 campaign approaching.
That is exactly what the Lakers and their fans want to hear with the majority of James' career still ahead of him.
