Suns' Updated Salary Cap After Devin Booker's Historic $145M Contract Extension

Andrew PetersJul 9, 2025

The Phoenix Suns rewarded their franchise player with a massive contract extension on Wednesday.

Per ESPN's Shams Charania, Booker agreed to a two-year, $145 million extension with the Suns. The deal is the highest annual extension salary in NBA history.

Heading into the 2025-26 season, the Suns are $90.7 million over the salary cap, $23.4 million over the first apron and $11.5 million over the second apron, per Spotrac.

Booker's current contract will pay him $171.2 million over the next three years, and his new deal will begin in 2028-29.

Booker, still just 28 years old, helped lead the Suns out of a rebuild and to their first Finals appearance in nearly 30 years in 2021. Through coach firings and several major roster changes, Booker has been a mainstay of the organization for the last decade.

He's emerged as one of the best scorers in the league year in and year out while remaining extremely durable, playing 60 or more games in eight of his 10 seasons. Last year, Booker put up 25.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and a career-high 7.1 assists per game.

While Booker and the Suns ultimately got a deal done, the team was "bullish" on moving forward with the contract, per The Athletic's John Hollinger. Phoenix perhaps wanted to evaluate what direction it wanted to move in, but it seems the Suns landed on a future built around Booker.

The Suns have had an interesting offseason and will look like a new team next season. They traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets and got Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks in return. Phoenix reportedly is potentially moving on from Bradley Beal via a contract buyout as well.

On top of a changing roster, the Suns will have a new coach for the 2025-26 campaign in Jordan Ott, the eighth different head coach Booker has had since he was drafted in 2015.

While the future for the Suns is very uncertain at this point, they can at least rest assured knowing that they'll have Booker for several more years.
