The Mavericks announced last Wednesday that they had signed Flagg to a four-year deal after selecting the former Duke star with the top pick of the 2025 draft. Spotrac projects the contract's value at $62.7 million.
Flagg said during his introductory press conference after the draft that he was planning on playing in the Summer League.
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd indicated that the team planned to put Flagg out on the court against the Lakers.
"I want to put him at the point guard. I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts, being able to run the show, being able to play the 2, play the 3," Kidd said. "He's comfortable playing that, but we want to push, and I think he's going to respond in a positive way."
Kidd concluded: "I'm excited about giving him the ball against the Lakers and see what happens. Let's get it started right off the bat."
James, whom the Lakers selected with the No. 55 pick of the 2024 draft, is heading into the second year of his own rookie contract.
He made his 2025 Summer League debut on Sunday, where he scored 10 points on 3-for-7 shooting against the Miami Heat.
After splitting last season between the NBA and the G League's South Bay Lakers, James is likely hoping to earn more playing time with the Lakers next season with a strong Summer League showing. Flagg will meanwhile take his first step toward a potential opening-night starting role with his Mavericks debut.
The Mavericks and Lakers tip off the Las Vegas Summer League on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. The tournament will wrap up with championship game on July 20.
