Paul George Talks Damian Lillard Injury, Projects Star to Rockets After Bucks Exit

Andrew PetersJul 7, 2025

After Damian Lillard suffered a season-ending torn Achilles and was ultimately released by the Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George gave his thoughts on the situation.

George said that, on one hand, the Bucks releasing Lillard was the best move for the point guard.

"In one way it's like 'Alright, Dame, we're shedding this money, we're going to pay you your money, but then you get a chance to go play somewhere and compete for a championship," he said. "'We maybe think the window here is closed.' You get healthy, you get healthy, you get a chance to go pick where you want to play."

George also argued that the team thinks it's still capable of winning and needed to move on from Lillard to achieve its goals.

As for a landing spot for Lillard, George thinks he's a fit for the Houston Rockets.

"Put him with Houston," George said. "...You put him on that team where there is a KD, there's defense around him, there's length around him. I always like if it's a smaller guard, pair him with length around him... There's enough youth around him to where he doesn't have to carry the load."

Like Lillard, George once dealt a devastating injury, suffering a compound fracture in his leg before the 2014-15 season. George said that one of the best things for his recovery was getting back to the court less than a year later. Though he admitted he wasn't at 100 percent, it fueled the following offseason for him.

"It gave me confidence going into that Summer, like 'Alright, if I got NBA games under my belt, I can attack this summer 100 percent,'" George said. "All in all, I think it was a good year turnaround for me."

Of course, Lillard's injury is different than the one George had, so his approach to rehab will be much different. Regardless, he'll look to recover quickly so he can continue chasing his first championship.
