David Roddy Waived by Hawks After Being Only Player Acquired in 7-Team NBA Trade
After landing on the Atlanta Hawks in the historic seven-team trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets, David Roddy has been waived.
The team announced the move on social media on Monday.
Roddy was the only player Atlanta received in the seven-team trade. The Hawks also received a second-round pick swap and cash.
Roddy, the 23rd overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, has had a tough time establishing himself as an everyday player through his first few seasons. He started his career with the Memphis Grizzlies and played 70 games as a rookie. He was traded to the Phoenix Suns during the 2023-24 campaign before being sent to Atlanta during the offseason.
His first stint with the Hawks was mostly unremarkable. He appeared in 27 games, putting up 4.5 points and 2.6 rebounds per game before being waived in February.
After being waived by Atlanta, he joined the Philadelphia 76ers on a 10-day contract before signing a two-way deal and spending most of his time in the G League. The team waived him less than a month after signing him.
That led him to sign a two-way deal with the Rockets to close out the 2024-25 season.
Ultimately, Roddy's second stint with the Hawks lasted less than a day, and he'll now try his luck in free agency. Though Roddy has had a tough time jumpstarting his NBA career, he's still just 24 years old and has plenty of time to establish himself as a solid role player.
While the trade that sent Roddy to the Hawks didn't have too many big names aside from Durant, it set the record for the most teams involved in one trade. Unfortunately for Roddy, being traded didn't exactly work out in his favor.
