Julia StumbaughJul 4, 2025

Naomi Osaka’s quest to get past the third round at Wimbledon for the first time in her career ended on Friday with a three-set loss to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Osaka won the first set against Pavlyuchenkova before dropping two straight in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss.

Osaka also lost in the third round of Wimbledon in 2017 and 2018.

This marks Pavlyuchenkova's first trip to the fourth round of the tournament since she qualified for the quarterfinals in 2016. She will now advance to face Sonay Kartal, who defeated Diane Parry after coming back from a 4-1 first-set deficit on Friday to advance to the fourth round for the first time in her career.

Osaka started out the round by clinching the first set with consecutive aces.

Pavlyuchenkova responded by starting out the second set 3-0, although Osaka stormed back to tie at 4-4.

The Russian made it through two break points before evening the match at one set apiece.

The two players went through a similar rhythm in the third set, where Osaka came back from a 3-0 deficit but couldn't force the break points before faltering with back-to-back errors as Pavlyuchenkova clinched the win.

Osaka told reporters after the win that she had "nothing positive to say about myself," per the WTA.

"It's not like I can really even be mad at myself," Osaka said. "I was thinking about the break points that I had. She hit some really good serves. Then she hit a backhand. I can't really do that much about it."

This marks the fourth straight loss Osaka has suffered in a three-set match, also having dropped them in Berlin, Paris and Rome.

She now holds a career record of 0-6 when pushed to three sets at Wimbledon or the French Open, per ESPN.

Pavlyuchenkova, 34, is hoping to make a major quarterfinal for the 10th time in her career after reaching her ninth at the Australian Open in January.

Like on Friday, when Pavlyuchenkova acknowledged the crowd had been cheering for Osaka, she will likely face an opponent backed by the home crowd in Britain's Kartal.

Fellow British players Emma Raducanu and Cameron Norrie remain in the tournament, although Raducanu will need to defeat World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on Friday to advance to the fourth round.
