Knicks Reportedly Informing Potential Free Agents HC Search Is 'Nearing' Conclusion

The New York Knicks remain without a head coach after firing Tom Thibodeau this offseason, but their coaching search may have a light at the end of the tunnel.

According to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, the Knicks "have been telling prospective free agents that they are nearing a resolution to their coaching search."

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Monday that the Knicks planned to meet with Mike Brown for a second time and that he has "emerged as a strong candidate." Brown would bring plenty of experience to the table, with previous stops serving as the head coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers (twice), Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers.

Former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins and Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach Micah Nori have also interviewed for the job, per that report, while the Knicks are also said to have interest in James Borrego.

The Knicks raised some eyebrows this season after not only firing Thibs—who was 226-174 with the team and led them to four playoff appearances in five years, including the Eastern Conference Finals this season—but when they reportedly went sniffing around head coaches currently under contract, including Dallas' Jason Kidd, Houston's Ime Udoka and Minnesota's Chris Finch.

The firing of Thibodeau made sense if you believed the team had reached its ceiling under his watch. His questionable rotations and slow adjustments in the playoffs, alongside his tendency to wear out his starters by playing them enormous minutes, lent ample credence to that perspective.

The organization's approach to their coaching search this summer has been a bit bizarre, however. If the goal was to pry a head coach away from teams who have a legitimate chance to be contenders next season, it was an ill-conceived plan.

From the sounds of it, however, the team has pivoted from that approach and a resolution to the situation is imminent.
