The Knicks fired former head coach Tom Thibodeau days after the team's elimination from its first conference finals trip in 25 years.

Fouls were an issue for Towns throughout last season. Both he and Thibodeau acknowledged it was a part of his game he needed to work on at the midway point of the 2024-25 campaign.

“There’s good aggressive fouls and there’s fouls that are obviously cheap that you have to clean up,” Thibodeau said last December, per New York Post's Stefan Bondy. “I think that’s the important thing for him to understand, the difference between the two and how it’s being called. I think discipline is the most important thing."

Towns meanwhile said at the time: “Maybe I’ve got to make better decisions. I give up possibly one to two. So do my job first. Take out the ones that I can handle.”

But fouls continued to be an issue for Towns heading into the playoffs. He ranked second only to the Indiana Pacers' Aaron Nesmith for the postseason lead with 78 fouls, per StatMuse.

The Knicks ultimately fired Thibodeau after the team fell short of the NBA Finals, in part because there was "doubt" within the organization that he could lead the team to a title after losing in six games to the Pacers, per ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

The franchise has since formally interviewed New Orleans Pelicans associate coach James Borrego, former Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown, former Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins and Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach Micah Nori, per ESPN's Shams Charania.

The Knicks were previously reportedly denied interviews with the Chicago Bulls' Billy Donovan, Dallas Mavericks' Jason Kidd, Houston Rockets' Ime Udoka, Minnesota Timberwolves' Chris Finch and Atlanta Hawks' Quin Snyder.

Whoever the Knicks ultimately hire will be tasked with leading the team to a title. It seems like Towns believes Thibodeau's replacement might also focus on helping him address his foul troubles.
