No previous players have worn No. 77 for the Sixers franchise, according to Basketball Reference.
Edgecombe wore No. 7 during his single season at Baylor. That number was worn in Philadelphia by Sixers guard Kyle Lowry last season.
There is a still a chance No. 7 could become available this summer given that Lowry is hitting unrestricted free agency after the expiration of his previous one-year, $3.3 million contract with the Sixers.
Lowry, 39, said in April that he wants to play one more season and "hopefully" to stay in Philadelphia (h/t Ky Carlin of Sixers Wire.)
Given that the Sixers entered the 2024-25 season as the oldest team in the NBA, however, the franchise could be looking to focus on getting younger this season rather than retaining the veteran guard.
Edgecombe also wore No. 1 while playing for Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, New York. That number was most recently worn by Sixers backup center Andre Drummond, who took back over the number following last season's KJ Martin trade.
Drummond, whom Spotrac reports has a $5 million player option to return next season, has indicated he wants to return next season.
Edgecombe, who measured in at 6-foot-4 barefoot and 193 pounds at the NBA draft combine, averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals for Baylor last season.
He will now join Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain on a crowded guard depth chart. Whether or the Sixers re-sign Quentin Grimes, who is currently a restricted free agent following the expiration of his rookie contract, will influence what role Edgecombe plays in the Philadelphia backcourt next fall.
