Knicks Reportedly to Interview James Borrego for HC Job This Weekend
The New York Knicks will be bringing in James Borrego for an interview.
NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that the Knicks are bringing in the current New Orleans Pelicans assistant coach to New York for an in-person interview this weekend.
The Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau following a loss in the Eastern Conference Finals. He had been the team's head coach since 2020-21.
Borrego has been an assistant for the Pelicans since 2023. Prior to that, he served as the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 2018-2022 and compiled a 148-183 overall record. He previously served as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs and won two NBA Championships on that staff.
The Knicks went 51-31 in 2024-25, and the trip to the Eastern Conference Finals was the first for the franchise since the 1999-00 season. Despite this achievement, a disappointing showing against the Indiana Pacers in the conference finals and some dissatisfaction from the players led to Thibodeau's dismissal.
In addition to Borrego, the Knicks have also been linked to Mike Brown, Taylor Jenkins and Micah Nori. The franchise had requested permission to interview Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch and Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka, but all of the requests were denied by their current teams.
