Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga Reportedly Drawing 'Legitimate' Trade Interest from Heat

Adam WellsJun 25, 2025

After another erratic season with the Golden State Warriors, Jonathan Kuminga will enter restricted free agency, putting his future at the center of the club's offseason plans.

Per The Athletic's Anthony Slater, the Miami Heat have "legitimate" interest in acquiring Kuminga this summer.

Shams Charania of ESPN also reported the Heat's interest in Kuminga during the NBA draft:

The Warriors do have some leverage because they could match any offer sheet Kuminga might receive, with Slater noting they could look into sign-and-trade packages for the 22-year-old.

ESPN's Bobby Marks pointed out that a sign-and-trade would likely be in Kuminga's best interest because the Brooklyn Nets are the only team with enough cap space to offer a starting salary of at least $20 million.

The Nets are not believed to have interest in signing Kuminga.

Even though Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. has expressed optimism about bringing Kuminga back, there are some obstacles aside from the finances of signing him that could make it difficult.

Kuminga's contentious relationship with head coach Steve Kerr has been well-documented. The Ringer's Logan Murdock reported last month Kerr was "incensed" at Kuminga during an April 11 game against the Portland Trail Blazers for several instances in which he looked off Stephen Curry to "create his own offense."

HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reported on June 16 that Kuminga is seeking an "expanded and consistent role."

The Heat have frequently been linked to Kuminga, with that connection seemingly growing stronger after they missed out on Kevin Durant when the Phoenix Suns agreed to trade him to the Houston Rockets.

According to the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson and Anthony Chiang, the Heat have "been active in the trade market this week in the wake of not landing" Durant.

Miami reportedly had interest in Kuminga leading up to the trade deadline, but the Warriors were able to hold onto him when they made the deal for Jimmy Butler.

Given Kuminga's desire to be more of an offensive focal point, the Heat would be a solid landing spot. They don't have many high-level creators on the roster right now, with Tyler Herro being their primary ball-handler.

The Heat would also be relying on their strong track record of player development to unlock the full potential in Kuminga four years after he was the No. 7 pick in the 2021 draft.

Kuminga did shoot over 50.0 percent from the field in each of his first three seasons. He has averaged 15.8 points per game in 121 appearances over the past two seasons.
