Jonathan Kuminga Contract Reportedly Not Eyed by Nets amid NBA Free Agency Rumors
The Brooklyn Nets aren't looking to provide Golden State Warriors forward and impending restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga with an offer sheet, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
"There is not a current expectation that the Brooklyn Nets are preparing an offer sheet for Kuminga, but there are signs Brooklyn could be willing to use its open cap space as a vehicle to execute multi-team trade scenarios this summer, league sources said."
Kuminga, who turns 23 in October, averaged 15.3 points on 45.4 percent shooting (30.5 percent from three), 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 47 games for the Warriors in 2024-25, his fourth NBA season.
He particularly showcased his scoring talents over Golden State's final three games against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals, posting 26.3 points per contest.
The Nets are set to have a ton of cap space shortly. Of note, center Nic Claxton ($23.1 million) and Cam Johnson ($22.5 million) are the only players currently officially on the books for the 2026-27 campaign, per Spotrac.
Brooklyn is also armed with a host of first-round draft picks, including four this year (No. 8, No. 19, No. 26 and No. 27), in addition to eight first-rounders from 2026-2030.
So general manager Sean Marks has the resources to get to work and rebuild a Nets team that just went 26-56 and hasn't won a playoff game since 2021.
It doesn't appear that the Nets are going after Kuminga via free agency, but the Nets could certainly involve themselves in "multi-team trade scenarios," as Slater noted.
As for Kuminga, it's unclear where he'll go next. He's an exciting player with plenty of potential at his best, as shown during the second round of the playoffs. But he's also been inconsistent at times and maybe hasn't shown as much development and growth as hoped over a four-year career that began with him being selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft.
That being said, Kuminga isn't even 23 yet, and there's plenty of time for him to continue his development. He certainly ended his season on a high note, perhaps enough for him to garner a lucrative offer sheet. Or maybe he sticks with the Warriors, where he has a big fan in governor Joe Lacob, per Slater.
“I was listening to the guys behind me tonight give running commentary—T-Wolves fans,” Lacob said to The Athletic following Game 5. “(Kuminga)'s the guy they talked about all night long. He’s the only guy that could really guard (Anthony Edwards) out there. Did a pretty damn good job. He had a tough situation with the DNPs from the last series, and to bounce back from that, I give him a lot of credit. I’m a big fan of his.”
We'll find out soon enough where the tea leaves lead and where Kuminga lands as the offseason continues. Of note, teams can begin negotiating with upcoming free agents on June 30.
