Knicks Reportedly Eye Wolves' Micah Nori for HC amid Borrego, Brown, Jenkins Rumors

Adam WellsJun 24, 2025

Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori has been added to the mix for the New York Knicks as they search for a new head coach.

Per ESPN's Shams Charania, Nori will have a formal interview with the Knicks.

This will be the third known interview New York has conducted since firing Tom Thibodeau on June 3. Mike Brown and Taylor Jenkins previously met with club officials, per Charania.

Per The Athletic's James L. Edwards III, the Knicks have also "tossed around the idea" of interviewing former Charlotte Hornets head coach James Borrego.

Edwards noted Jenkins and Brown were "impressive" during their interviews with the team, both of which took place over the course of multiple days last week.

After their initial attempts to interview several head coaches who are currently employed didn't pan out, the Knicks have started to cast a wide net in their search.

Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News noted they inquired about Sean Sweeney before he decided to leave his position as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks to join new San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson's staff.

Of the three candidates known to have interviewed with the Knicks at this point, Nori is the only one without any previous experience as a head coach.

Brown has a 454-304 record in 758 games with three different teams over 11 seasons. He most recently coached the Sacramento Kings, who fired him on Dec. 27 after a 13-18 start to the 2024-25 season.

Jenkins went 250-214 in six seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies. He was surprisingly fired on March 28 with nine games remaining in the regular season, despite leading the team to a 44-29 record at the time of his dismissal.

Nori has been working as an assistant in the NBA for the past 16 seasons. He joined the Timberwolves staff as Chris Finch's lead assistant prior to the 2021-22 season.

Even though he hasn't been a head coach thus far, Nori has been a popular name whenever a job opens up. The 51-year-old interviewed with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers last offseason. He was also among the candidates considered by the Phoenix Suns before they hired Mike Budenholzer.

Of the six teams that made a coaching change during or after the 2024-25 season, the Knicks are the only that has not yet hired a replacement. It's certainly an attractive job with a strong nucleus of talent coming off a 51-win season and an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals.
