2025 NBA Draft Scouting Report for Philadelphia 76ers No. 3 Pick VJ Edgecombe
The Philadelphia 76ers have selected VJ Edgecombe with the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA draft.
Edgecombe earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors this past season at Baylor and was named second-team All-Big 12.
The 6'4" guard also set a Baylor freshman record with 68 steals. And on the year, his 2.1 steals per game tied for 27th in the country.
Edgecombe checks every athletic box with quickness, burst and bounce to help him overtake defenders. He plays above the rim, and he pressures the ball defensively.
He also improved his outside shot as a freshman, becoming a spot-up three-point threat.
Overall, Edgecombe isn’t the most advanced creator, often relying on speed over handle when trying to get into traffic.
Still, his defensive instincts and proven production raise his floor as a feisty, difference-making rotational guard.
Add in more shooting consistency and skill development, and it’s easy to envision Edgecombe growing into a legitimate two-way impact player.
Edgecombe ranks No. 3 on B/R NBA draft expert Jonathan Wasserman’s 2025 Prospect Big Board.

Realistic Pro Comparison: Victor Oladipo
1 of 3
Victor Oladipo arrived to the NBA with explosive athleticism and budding skill, and Edgecombe will bring the same with a similar style and swagger.
Neither were go-to scorers early. Oladipo became a better creator and shotmaker, and Edgecombe has flashed similar skills while making his mark with slashing, finishes and defensive quickness.
Oladipo made two All-Star games and would've made more if not for injuries.
Strengths
2 of 3
Athleticism/Tools: Edgecombe checks every athletic box with his quickness, burst, bounce for blowing by opponents, playing above the rim and defending.
Shooting: The guard improved as a shooter to become a competent spot-up three-point threat, which is one of the more translatable skills from college to the modern NBA.
Decision-Making: Edgecombe was generally a good decision-maker, and he was a willing passer who had a strong assist-to-turnover ratio during his one-and-done season.
Weaknesses
3 of 3
Creation: Despite his solid assist-to-turnover ratio, Edgecombe isn't the sharpest creator. He leans on burst and explosion over advanced ball-handling skills in traffic. Most of his jump-shot production was off spot-up threes.
Interior Scoring: Edgecombe wasn't the best below-the-rim finisher, as he struggled to make adjustments and contested layups.
Pull-Up Shooting: Edgecombe didn't demonstrate great fluidity getting into his pull-up. He shot a poor percentage overall on dribble jumpers.
