Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren Reportedly Expected to Get 'Massive' Thunder Contracts

After the Oklahoma City Thunder won the 2025 NBA championship, the team reportedly will now turn its attention to rewarding its young stars.

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that "the prevailing notion within league circles is young stars Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren will receive massive rookie-scale extensions from the Thunder."

Oklahoma City struck gold in the 2022 NBA draft when it selected Holmgren with the No. 2 pick and Williams with the No. 12 pick. Both players quickly developed into key contributors to the team's championship run. Williams was selected to his first All-Star Game this year, and Holmgren bounced back from a hip fracture that cost him 50 games during the regular season.

In the seven-game NBA Finals against the Indiana Pacers, Williams averaged 23.6 points and had a 40-point outing in Game 5. Holmgren averaged 12.3 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks while anchoring the Thunder defense. They helped bring the franchise its first championship in the Oklahoma City era with a 103-91 win in Sunday's Game 7.

Scotto noted that there's still a question as to "whether [Williams and Holmgren] get full maximum rookie-scale extensions or take a slight discount to help the Thunder financially long-term." With NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander also in line for a major contract extension, it will be interesting to see how Oklahoma City navigates the financial aspect of building a dynasty.
