Suns Reportedly to Be 'Aggressive' After Durant Trade, Mandated to Build Around Booker

Zach BacharJun 23, 2025

The Phoenix Suns are expected to build around Devin Booker during the 2025 offseason after trading Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets on Sunday, according to ESPN's Tim Bontemps.

"Sources said Phoenix is expected to be aggressive over the next couple of weeks, with a mandate to retool its roster around Booker," Bontemps reported. "He is expected to get a two-year extension next month in the neighborhood of $150 million, tying him to the franchise through the 2029-30 season."

Questions still surround Phoenix's current roster with the 2025 NBA draft approaching on Wednesday.

"They have a lot of talented players," an executive told Bontemps, "but do they fit together?"

The Suns acquired Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft and five second-round picks from the Rockets in exchange for Durant, per ESPN's Shams Charania.

Phoenix seems to be prepared to make several more moves as the offseason continues, an understandable strategy considering the team snapped a streak of four consecutive playoff appearances by finishing with a 36-46 record during the 2024-25 season.

The Suns already fired head coach Mike Budenholzer, with Booker reportedly involving in the search for a new coach before the team hired former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott on June 4.

Despite Phoenix's disappointing overall year, Booker remained one of the NBA's most efficient high-volume offensive players. He averaged 25.6 points and a career-high 7.1 assists per game on 46.1/33.2/89.4 shooting splits.

The four-time All-Star has remained consistent when healthy, recording 26.7 points per game while shooting 47.7 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from three across the past four seasons.

As the Suns continue to shake up their roster, trading veteran Bradley Beal could be the next step.

Doug Haller, Sam Amick, and Kelly Iko of The Athletic reported Sunday that Phoenix is "expected to try and part ways" with Beal over the summer. It's worth noting that he would need to waive the no-trade clause in his contract, though.

Even if Beal isn't traded, expect the Suns to continue their busy offseason.
