Knicks Reportedly Eye James Borrego After 'Impressive' Brown, Jenkins HC Interviews

Zach BacharJun 23, 2025

The New York Knicks have "tossed around the idea" of interviewing New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego for the team's current vacancy at head coach, according to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic.

Per Edwards, the Knicks have already held "impressive" interviews with former Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown and former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins "over multiple days."

New York is on the hunt for a new head coach after firing Tom Thibodeau on June 3.

The Knicks have also reportedly attempted to interview several current head coaches for the job opening but have been denied by opposing organizations.

The Dallas Mavericks rejected New York's request to meet with Jason Kidd, but SNY's Ian Begley reported that "the door is not completely closed" between the Knicks and Kidd on June 16.

As for Borrego, he has several years of experience as a head coach. Following a brief interim stint with the Orlando Magic during the 2014-15 season, he eventually served as the Charlotte Hornets' head coach from 2018-22.

The Hornets owned a 138-163 record during Borrego's tenure, which included a 43-39 finish during his final year with the organization. It's worth noting that Charlotte hasn't recorded more than 27 wins in each of the three seasons since he parted ways with the team.

Borrego is also "known around the league for his offensive creativity and analytics-forward approach," per Edwards.

The Knicks are looking to build upon a promising 2024-25 season, finishing with a 51-31 record to go along with the No. 5 offensive rating in the association (via NBA.com).

New York advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000, ultimately falling to the Indiana Pacers in six games.

As the Knicks continue to search for a new head coach, Borrego is reportedly on their radar.
