NBA Scout Calls Ace Bailey 'Goofy' and Maturity is 'Age-Appropriate' amid Draft Rumors

Joseph ZuckerJun 18, 2025

One NBA scout doesn't see any serious concerns when it comes to the maturity level of Rutgers star Ace Bailey heading into the 2025 NBA draft.

"He's not immature like a [butthead]. … He's goofy," the scout said to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Keith Pompey. "Dancing in line. You are doing drills, he's dancing. 'Oh, that’s my song.' … He's playful, which is age-appropriate."

Pompey reported that "Bailey's immaturity isn't associated with being a bad person or unruly."

Especially with a prospect as highly regarded as Bailey, talent evaluators scrutinize his game and personality with a fine-tooth comb. Think back to the 2020 draft, when some were wondering whether eventual No. 1 overall pick Anthony Edwards actually liked basketball.

In his lone season with the Scarlet Knights, Bailey averaged 17.6 points on 46 percent shooting, including 34.6 percent from beyond the arc. He also pulled down 7.2 rebounds per contest.

Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman projected him to go sixth overall to the Washington Wizards, while Pompey reported he's scheduled to work out for the Sixers, who have the No. 3 pick.

However, Jonathan Givony of ESPN reported that Baylor's VJ Edgecombe has emerged as "the leader in the clubhouse" for Philly after the team bristled at Bailey's choice not to work out at first. He was "initially unsatisfied with his search for a proven pathway to development," per Givony.

Now, the 6'7" forward will have a chance to personally address whatever questions the Sixers brass have as they weigh their options.
