Giannis, Jaylen Brown Reportedly Targeted by Spurs amid Kevin Durant Trade Rumors
The San Antonio Spurs are casting a wide net as they weigh any available avenues to make a major upgrade this summer.
In addition to being linked with the Phoenix Suns' Kevin Durant, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo and Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown could be on San Antonio's radar.
The buzz surrounding Antetokounmpo has quieted down to the extent that ESPN's Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst reported on June 13 the signs right now point to him staying in Milwaukee.
In the event Giannis actually requests a trade, the Spurs are one of the more obvious fits. They could make the Bucks a compelling offer consisting of draft picks and young players. The chance to join Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox is probably enticing to Antetokounmpo as well.
Until the status quo changes, this door appears to be closed for San Antonio.
Brown's availability, on the other hand, is a little more murky.
There are conflicting reports on Boston's willingness to part with the four-time All-Star, but his inclusion in this conversation reflects two tough realities for the Celtics.
Jayson Tatum's Achilles injury is a big hit to their short-term championship window, and the Tatum/Brown axis is only getting more expensive. Even if Tatum comes back and is exactly the same player, it will be tough to fill out the roster when he and Brown are combining to make $120-plus million.
Now isn't a bad time for the franchise to hit the reset button by getting younger and cheaper. Making that choice is easier said than done when Boston is only a year removed from winning a title.
When it comes to the Spurs, we're still a lot of steps away from them introducing a new marquee acquisition. The interest in Durant and Siegel's report points to how the front office is ready to be aggressive in building a contender around Wembanyama.
