Rafael Devers Traded to Giants, Red Sox Land Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, More
The Boston Red Sox traded slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster deal on Sunday.
Boston received pitcher Kyle Harrison (who was optioned to Triple-A), pitcher Jordan Hicks, outfielder James Tibbs III and pitcher Jose Bello in return.
FanSided's Robert Murray first reported the deal.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Red Sox won't cover any of the remaining money on Devers' 11-year extension worth $331 million that he previously signed in 2023.
Devers didn't demand a trade before the agreement between Boston and San Francisco was reached, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com.
While the move is surprising with the July 31 trade deadline still over a month away, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic previously reported that a trade involving Devers "isn't all that far-fetched."
Right-handed pitching prospect Jose Bello will be sent to Boston as part of Sunday's deal as well, per Murray.
The Red Sox reportedly felt that Devers didn't "live up" to the "responsibilities" of his hefty contract, which factored into the decision to trade him.
The 28-year-old has suited up for Boston since 2017, developing into a key piece of a lineup that eventually captured a World Series title in 2018. Devers ranks No. 10 on the all-time home runs list for the Red Sox, with 215 homers throughout his career.
He primarily played third base during his tenure in Boston, but switched to designated hitter after the team signed Alex Bregman in free agency.
Devers initially said that he would reject the position change, but ultimately acquiesced. The Red Sox later approached the three-time All-Star about moving to first base in the wake of Triston Casas' season-ending injury, but he wasn't willing to do so.
Devers has started off the 2025 season on a high note at the plate, racking up 15 home runs and 18 doubles to go along with 58 RBIs while posting a .272/.401/.504 slash line.
Hicks has appeared in 13 games with the Giants this season, including nine starts. He owns a 6.47 ERA and 1.541 WHIP in 48.2 innings of work.
As for Harrison, he's compiled a 4.56 ERA during eight appearances in 2025 despite racking up 25 strikeouts in 23.2 innings pitched.
The addition of Devers should provide a major boost to a Giants squad that already owns a 41-30 record to open the year, currently sitting one game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the No. 1 spot in the National League West.
