NBA Rumors: Latest on Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and More

Chris RolingJul 11, 2015

The drama around DeAndre Jordan and others might be over, but the NBA rumor mill is far from complete with its offseason cycle.

Fans should be thankful, really, as most offseasons aren't as entertaining as this one has been so far. It could still only get better, too, as teams continue to hunt for cap space and improvements that fit their plans.

Below, let's take a look at the latest from the mill, highlighted by a couple of rebuilding teams that stand as strong candidates to make more moves and shake up the Association.

Clippers Not Done?

As hinted, the Los Angeles Clippers have been rather busy this offseason.

It makes sense, as the team would like to continue to contend if possible, and securing Jordan was a major part of the process.

Now it sounds like depth takes a spot in the seat of importance.

According to ESPN's Marc Stein, the next target could be Josh Smith:

Smith would not be a horrible add for the Clippers if it means more depth behind Blake Griffin.

Last year, Smith spent his time with the Houston Rockets after a couple of years in Detroit. He still averaged 12.4 points, 3.3 assists and 6.4 rebounds per game.

He can act as similar key depth with the Clippers, so keep an eye on what might be a budding situation.

Nick Young Staying Put?

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to march onward with their rebuild. One of the main pieces of rumblings around the team as of late is Nick Young.

It makes sense, too. The Lakers added Lou Williams and other pieces this offseason, which caused many to think Young's shot-happy ways in Los Angeles were up. Feel free to add in a rather large contract.

According to Ryan Ward of Lakers Nation, though, Young isn't going anywhere:

As Ward hints, one of the popular narratives around Young pertained to a deal with the Chicago Bulls, but it is beginning to sound like any and all potential moves are off the table.

This could change, of course. Young may be 30 years old and struggle on defense, but he did average 13.4 points last year and could act as a key piece of depth on most teams.

If the front office in Los Angeles feels it could make a run at a playoff seed, it might keep Young around. If not, it might be best to get his salary off the books, so stay tuned.

Joe Johnson Latest

So much for Joe Johnson getting out of Brooklyn.

The Nets wanting to dump one of their two major contracts to free up cap space and better rebuild in the future was one of the offseason's most popular narratives.

The front office accomplished the mission recently by dumping Deron Williams, per ESPN.com. According to NetsDaily.com, the move means Johnson isn't going anywhere:

So ends one of the most interesting offseason situations. The front office chose to keep Johnson for one main reason, too:

Johnson comes at quite the price. He is a $24.8 million cap hit next year, per Spotrac. The idea of the Nets finding a trade partner never seemed very realistic in the first place.

For now, at least, Johnson will stay put and cost the Nets a pretty penny as he continues to fade. Remember, though, it only takes one team in need and a fat wallet to make something happen.

This one sounds dead in the water, but veterans of the mill know better, so keep an eye out,
