Jrue Holiday, Marcus Smart Reportedly Linked to Kings as PG Options amid Trade Rumors

Don't be surprised if the Sacramento Kings may a strong push to acquire Boston Celtics point guard Jrue Holiday or Washington Wizards defensive dynamo Marcus Smart.

According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, "New general manager Scott Perry, remember, immediately highlighted the Kings' need for improved playmaking during his introductory press conference and sources have duly linked Sacramento to various guards known to be available this summer. That list includes Holiday in Boston and Smart in Washington... and stretches to more affordable free agent ballhandlers like Malcolm Brogdon."

Boston has been rumored to be a potential seller this offseason, with a bloated payroll and Jayson Tatum likely to miss most, if not all, of the 2025-26 season with a torn Achilles. Holiday and his $32.4 million salary for the upcoming season—he's under contract in total for two more years, with a player option for 2027-28 as well—make him an obvious choice to unload if those reported plans are true.

The Wizards, meanwhile, are stuck in a full rebuild and moving on from veteran players like Smart—especially as he enters the final year of his contract—for younger players or assets makes sense.

The Kings need a point guard to replace De'Aaron Fox, who they traded to the San Antonio Spurs, so their interest in both players makes sense, though Holiday is already 35 and the possibility of paying him over $30 million a year for the next three seasons may give a number of teams pause. Smart would be more of a stopgap option while the team evaluated more long-term possibilities.
