Kevin Porter Jr. Reportedly Will Let Player Option Expire, Become Unrestricted FA

Andrew PetersJun 28, 2025

After spending the second half of the season with the Milwaukee Bucks, Kevin Porter Jr. could join a new squad this summer.

Per The Athletic's Fred Katz and Eric Nehm, Porter informed the Bucks he will let his player option for the 2025-26 season expire and will become an unrestricted free agent.

Porter's player option was worth $2.5 million.

The Bucks added Porter at the trade deadline after he started the 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Clippers. In 30 games, mostly off the bench, Porter put up 11.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.3 steals while playing about 20 minutes per game.

Porter was drafted by the Bucks in the first round of the 2019 NBA draft but was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he spent his rookie year. The Cavs traded him to the Houston Rockets in 2021, where he had the best stint of his career, averaging 17.1 points per game in three seasons.

That stretch led to him earning a four-year, $82.5 million extension in 2022, but he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder a year later after being arrested on suspicion of domestic violence. The Thunder waived Porter shortly after the trade.

Porter played in the Greek Basket League in 2024 before joining the Clippers last summer.

While Porter hasn't been the player he showed flashes of being during his time with the Rockets, he emerged as one of the Bucks' top options off the bench this season, and the 25-year-old will look to continue playing his role well wherever he may end up next.
