If you bought a jersey for Boston Red Sox rookie Roman Anthony, then there's a good chance it's a collector's item already.
Anthony has switched his uniform number from 48 to 19, which he wore in the minor leagues, ahead of Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays:

Veteran pitcher Sean Newcomb claimed No. 19 with the Red Sox to open the 2025 season, but his May trade to the Athletics put it back in circulation.
Anthony's promotion wasn't planned far in advance and only came about because a left oblique strain sent Wilyer Abreu to the 10-day injured list. Sorting out his jersey number probably wasn't a major priority before he debuted.
The 21-year-old prospect, whom Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter ranked first overall coming into the season, went 0-for-4 with an RBI in Monday's 10-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
While it wasn't a great first outing for Anthony, his .285/.402/.477 slash line in the minors is going to translate at some point.
Maybe he'll fare better in Tuesday's contest since he's had a little more time to adjust to being an MLB player.
Should the dynamic outfielder be as good as everyone hopes, what number he wore in his first game is likely to become a staple of sports trivia in New England for long time to come.
