De'Aaron Fox 'Would Definitely Hope' for Spurs Contract Extension amid NBA Rumors
Following his arrival in a trade with the Sacramento Kings during the 2024-25 season, guard De'Aaron Fox is looking to make the San Antonio Spurs organization his long-term home.
Speaking to Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle, Fox said, "I would definitely hope so," when asked about potentially signing a contract extension with the Spurs this summer.
Originally the No. 5 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft out of Kentucky, Fox spent parts of his first eight NBA seasons in Sacramento, earning an All-Star nod and All-NBA Third Team selection in 2022-23.

Overall, Fox appeared in 514 regular-season games with the Kings, averaging 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.5 three-pointers made and 1.4 steals per contest.
However, amid the Kings' struggles this season and the mounting possibility of Fox leaving in free agency after the 2025-26 campaign, he was traded to San Antonio in February as part of a three-team deal.
Fox appeared in 17 games for the Spurs after the trade, averaging 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 1.5 three-pointers made and 1.5 steals, but tendon damage in his pinkie finger cut his season short, as it required surgery.
The 27-year-old provided a positive update on his health, saying the surgery "went fine," and he has already been cleared by doctors.
Fox is signed through the 2025-26 season, meaning both he and the Spurs will likely be motivated to get an extension done before the start of the campaign.
If that happens, the Spurs will have Fox, 2023-24 NBA rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama, 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson all under contract for multiple years.
The Spurs own the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, and they are widely expected to select Rutgers guard Dylan Harper, adding another elite talent to the fold.
While it can be argued that adding Harper to a backcourt that already includes Castle makes it less necessary to extend Fox, it has long been rumored that the two sides wanted to work out a long-term deal.
Back in February, ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst said on SportsCenter that he expected Fox and the Spurs to come to terms on a "big" extension.
If the Spurs do extend Fox, they will boast one of the most talented cores in the NBA, and they will also possess plenty of ammo in terms of young players and draft picks to make a trade for another star if they choose to go that route.
